AI Visibility for UK Small Businesses: What It Is and Where to Start

Search behaviour is changing faster than most small business owners have had time to notice. Customers now ask ChatGPT for a recommendation, get a summarised answer from Google's AI Overviews, or ask Perplexity to compare a few options - often without ever clicking through to a website. If you run a UK small business, this matters just as much to you as it does to a national brand, but almost every tool built to track it is priced and written for a very different customer.

Why the current AI-visibility tools don't fit

Look at the AI-visibility and GEO (Generative Engine Optimisation) tools on the market today - Profound, Otterly, Peec AI, AthenaHQ and similar - and a pattern shows up quickly: entry pricing typically starts around $99-$295 a month, dashboards are built around enterprise marketing workflows, and almost all of the content explaining these tools is written with a US audience and US search behaviour in mind. If you're a UK plumber, a local accountant, or a small retailer, that's a lot of unfamiliar tooling and cost for a question that's genuinely simple: "if someone asks an AI assistant about what I sell, would I even come up?"

What actually matters at small-business scale

You don't need an enterprise dashboard to make progress here. A few things matter far more than the tooling:

  1. Can AI crawlers even reach your site? If GPTBot, ClaudeBot, or PerplexityBot are blocked in your robots.txt or at the server level, none of the rest matters - you're invisible by default, not by ranking. See our AI crawler accessibility checklist to check this yourself in a few minutes.
  2. Is your content structured so it's easy to extract and cite? Clear headings, direct answers near the top of a page, and well-organised facts (opening hours, service areas, pricing bands) are far easier for an AI system to lift accurately than a page that buries the answer in marketing copy.
  3. Do you show up consistently across the web, not just on your own site? AI answers frequently draw on third-party sources - directories, review sites, local listings - rather than brand websites directly. A consistent business name, address, and description across these matters more than it does for classic SEO.
  4. Is your basic technical SEO solid? The same fundamentals that help Google find and understand your site (fast load times, clear titles and headings, no broken pages) also make it easier for AI systems to parse and trust your content. This is the one area you can check for free today.

Where AuditCrow fits

Right now, AuditCrow's free scan checks the technical foundations above - SEO fundamentals, speed, accessibility, security, and content quality - on the page you provide, which is exactly the groundwork that AI crawlability and citation depend on. Our broader visibility audit - covering how you show up across Google, AI Overviews, ChatGPT, and social/directory listings in one pass - is still being built (you can see an early look on our Discover page and join the waitlist to be notified when it ships).

If you're a UK small business trying to figure out where to start, start with the free parts that are live today: run a free website audit to check your technical foundations, then work through the AI crawler checklist to make sure you're not accidentally invisible to the AI assistants your customers are already using.
