What Is a Featured Snippet? The Google Result Above Position One

A featured snippet is the highlighted answer box Google sometimes shows above the normal organic results, often called "position zero." It's pulled automatically from a page's existing content, not written or submitted separately, and it only comes from a page that's already ranking on the first page for that query. There's no special tag or code that requests one; Google's algorithm selects the source and the format on its own.

The Three Formats

  • Paragraph - a short, direct answer text pulled from a passage that follows a clearly-phrased question, most common for "what is" and definition-style queries.
  • List - numbered or bulleted, pulled from an actual <ol> or <ul> in the page, common for "how to" and step-based queries.
  • Table - pulled from an actual <table> element, common for comparison and pricing-style queries.

What Makes a Page Snippet-Eligible

There's no snippet-specific markup to add. What actually helps is the same clean, semantic structure that makes a page easy to read for anyone: a heading phrased close to how people actually search, a short direct answer immediately following it rather than several paragraphs of preamble first, and real list or table HTML elements rather than styled text made to look like a list. Google's snippet selection reads the page's structure, not its intent.

Worth Knowing Before You Chase One

A featured snippet isn't guaranteed to bring more clicks, and losing one isn't the traffic disaster it's sometimes made out to be. Google's own testing has shown a snippet can answer a query well enough on the results page itself that some searchers never click through at all, and AI Overviews now sit above snippets in many results, adding another layer between a ranking and an actual visit. Snippet-friendly structure is worth doing because it's good writing practice that also happens to be well suited to how Google reads a page, not because a snippet is a reliable traffic lever on its own.

The Fast Way to Check Yours

Restructuring content for snippet eligibility only matters if the underlying page is technically sound enough to rank on page one in the first place. AuditCrow's free scan covers the technical fundamentals a snippet depends on, and our technical SEO checklist has the rest.
