Is the cookie banner hiding your sales?

That pop-up which asks people to accept or reject cookies is there for a reason. It can also stop Google Analytics and your ads from hearing about visits and sales. The result looks like a dead website, or like revenue of zero, while the orders keep arriving.

Scan a page free when you want this checked on your own site.

What the banner is doing

Cookies are small files a site stores on someone's device. Some remember a basket. Others, used by analytics and ads, record the visit. UK and European rules mean you generally need a yes before the advertising and analytics ones run. The banner is that question.

If the site is set up carefully, nothing much is counted until the person taps Accept, and Reject is a real option. That is lawful and it will make your totals lower than the old days, when everything was counted. The fault is different: the tags never run even after Accept, or the sale is recorded by the shop but the analytics tag is still waiting for a yes that never gets tied to the order.

How this shows up in the business

Owners describe it as Analytics that does not make sense. Visits look too low. Revenue says zero. An ads account says it cannot see results, so it spends blindly or reports a collapse the week a new banner went live. The shop admin, which does not depend on that banner, still shows the orders.

A test you can do in one sitting

Use Google Analytics 4 Realtime, the view of the last few minutes. Have the shop admin open as well if you take orders online.

  1. Open a private or incognito window. Go to the site. Choose Reject, if it exists. Browse two pages. In Realtime, you should not appear as a normal analytics visit. If you do, the banner may be ignoring the refusal.
  2. Close that window. Open a new private window. Choose Accept. Browse again. You should appear in Realtime within a minute. If you do not, the tags are not running after a yes. That is the fault to hand a developer.
  3. If you can, place a cheap test order after Accept, and reach the confirmation page. Realtime should show a purchase, or at least the confirmation page. Then check the order exists in the shop admin either way. A sale in the admin and nothing in Realtime means the purchase event is blocked or missing. The zero-revenue guide continues from there.
  4. Try the same on a phone. Banners often behave differently there, and that is where a lot of local and shop traffic actually is.

Consent Mode, in one paragraph

You may hear 'Consent Mode'. It is a way of telling Google what the person chose, so Google can adjust its figures instead of simply receiving nothing. When it is set up badly, numbers go missing or start to look estimated in a way nobody can explain. You do not need to configure it yourself. You do need to ask whether it was checked after the banner was installed.

What to ask your agency or developer

Send the result of the test, not a vague 'analytics looks wrong'.

  • After I tap Accept, does the analytics tag run? I tried it today, and Realtime did or did not show me.
  • Does the purchase or enquiry event run on the confirmation step, after consent?
  • What is counted for people who reject, or who ignore the banner? I expect that to be little or nothing. I want the Accept path to be complete.
  • Did this change on the date the figures fell?
What we can check

Where AuditCrow fits

This test is the way to see the banner's effect. AuditCrow does not load your site as a shopper and watch which tags the banner blocks, so it will not flag that fault for you. Once you trust the Accept path, connecting Analytics in the platform puts those events next to the page checks.

Free page scan

One page, no signup

  • The public page: speed, content, and whether a visitor can take the next step
  • It does not click your cookie banner or inspect your tag setup

AuditCrow platform

Your whole site, kept watched

  • GA4 key events and conversions after you connect Analytics
  • Setup steps when those events look missing
  • Ads totals beside the page, so you can see spend next to whatever is actually being recorded

Do not expect the scan to diagnose the banner. The ten-minute test above is the diagnosis. Tag Manager, the tool many sites use to fire these tags, is not a connection AuditCrow offers. Your developer still owns that setup.
