Alt text

A written description of an image, used by screen readers and search engines when the image can't be seen.

Alt text is the text alternative on an image. Screen-reader users hear it in place of the image, and search engines use it to understand what the image shows. It's a core accessibility requirement and a small SEO win.

Good alt text describes the image's content and purpose concisely. Purely decorative images should have empty alt text so assistive tech can skip them, rather than being described unnecessarily.
