Google Analytics 4: how to install it on your website

Last reviewed

Google Analytics 4 (GA4) shows who visits your site, where they came from and what they do. Create a GA4 property, add its Measurement ID to your site once, then check your own visit appears in the Realtime report.

Why it matters

Without analytics you can't tell which pages, searches or campaigns bring in enquiries, so every marketing decision is a guess.

Search Console shows how you appear in Google; GA4 shows what visitors do once they arrive. You need both to connect rankings to results.

AuditCrow uses your GA4 data to show which fixes actually moved traffic and enquiries.

How AuditCrow checks this

When you connect Google Analytics to AuditCrow, the app checks the property matches your site and is receiving data.

How to fix it

  1. 1Create a GA4 property with a web data stream for your site at analytics.google.com, and copy its Measurement ID (it starts with G-).
  2. 2Add it to your site in one place only: your platform's Google Analytics setting, a plugin such as Site Kit, or the Google tag in your page head.
  3. 3If you show a cookie banner, Analytics only counts visitors who accept, so expect lower numbers.
  4. 4Visit your site and check your visit appears in the Realtime report within 30 minutes.
